"Procrastination happens before hard work. Incubation happens after hard work"

That's an excellent way of putting it. It reminds me of James Wood Young's A Technique for Getting Ideas (pdf), where consciously not-working is a vital part of the idea generation process - but only if you've put the hard work in beforehand.

This was excellent. Especially to see a famous writer say a blank piece of paper terrified her. Now when I am procrastinating, I'll know I need to move it along...

In my job I’ve been lucky enough to observe plenty of creative people at close quarters, at the various stages of procrastination, incubation and inspiration. I’ve also spent far more time than I really should have procrastinating over creative work and probably not enough time incubating and giving my imagination a chance to work things over without interference.
Mark, thank you for this today. I just realized how often I have sent a client a link to your site (and other coaching sites) when issues and inspiration dovetail. Today a client of mine was struggling in exactly this spot, so I sent her a link to this very post. Thank you.
