Does the UK Government Understand the Creative Industries?

20070616 08:09

More bad news - not only is China about to eat our creative industries for breakfast, but according to Discontents, a new report by think-tank Demos argues that the UK Government “doesn’t understand” the creative industries. Which is a bit of poke in the eye for a government that aspires to be a world leader in creative industries policy.

Discontents reports that Branwell Johnson reports that the Demos report reports that the government is “confused” about how to support creative businesses:

Demos argues that the standard approaches designed for traditional industries will not work with the creative sector. It points out that firms in this sector typically have less than 10 workers and rely on freelance activity.

It’s not a new argument, but it will be interesting to see the report itself when it’s published next Tuesday 19th June. There’s a launch event featuring Feargal Sharkey at the British Film Institute - last time I checked there were still free places available. I’ll be there - drop me an e-mail if you’re coming and want to meet up.

PSFK Conference - Morning

PSFK Logo
Very enjoyable time at the PSFK London conference the other day. It’s being extensively blogged elsewhere (links below) so I won’t try to cover the whole thing, just edited highlights. If you’re not familiar with the PSFK blog, it describes itself as “a lens of changes in cultural behaviour that influence all of us” - or to mix the metaphor, it’s a constant stream of new trends in media, business, fashion, the environment, entertainment etc etc. For someone like me it’s an interesting read, for professional marketers I gather it’s essential.

So where are all these trends leading us? The first conference session presented us with contrasting visions of the future. First up was Timo Veikkola, whose job is predicting the future for Nokia. I was intrigued to learn that we’re currently in a “Noah’s Ark period” of floods, cataracts and hurricanoes, not to mention Famine, War, Pestilence etc - but that by 2010 or so we’ll see renewed optimism in society, which apparently happens at the dawn of every decade. I was fascinated by Timo’s predictions and explanations of how he extrapolates from “What’s happening now?” to “What’s going to happen next?”. By the end of his presentation I was even starting to feel (dare I say it) quite optimistic. Thenl the bubble was burst (for me) when we were presented with the following quotation, apparently without irony:

“The one fact about the future of which we can be certain is that it will be utterly fantastic.” Arthur C. Clarke.

I was horrified. Surely the one fact about the future of which we can be certain is that we can’t be certain of it? And surely we’ve seen enough of the Brave New World to suggest that it’s not likely to be relentlessly “fantastic”?

As if on cue, Regine Debatty of We Make Money Not Art stepped up to offer a distinctly less Utopian take on the shape of things to come. Read the rest of this entry »

Wired and Ready Event at Channel 4 - 13 June

20070608 07:56

Steve Moore of Policy Unplugged sent me this notice about their latest event:

As part of the 4 Talent ‘Four Days in June’ series Policy Unplugged is organising an event next Wednesday 13 June to debate the future of multimedia, online communities and the web with experts from Channel 4, MySpace and lastminute.com

All the details are below. Click here if you would like to book a place.

Wired and Ready

13 June 4-6pm, followed by drinks

Martha Lane Fox, co-founder of lastminute.com and Channel 4 board member will chair a discussion on the increasing importance for broadcasters and producers to build online communities and provide dynamic content for multimedia audiences.

She will be talking to James Fabricant, Head of Marketing and Content for MySpace UK & Ireland, James Kirkham from digital strategists Holler - developers of the marketing campaign for E4’s Skins - and Adam Gee, Channel 4’s Commissioning Editor, New Media Factual.

I’ve been to several Policy Unplugged events and they’ve been consistently excellent - a great mix of interesting speakers and equally interesting fellow delegates to mix with. Tickets are free - hope to see you there.

likemind - Meet Creative People in Your City

20070502 09:37

I had a double helping of coffee recently, when I arrived early for Russell’s coffee morning so I could see what likemind was all about. What I found was a very welcoming group at the back of The Breakfast Club, hosted by Amanda and Piers of psfk fame. They had even arranged for the nice people at Anomaly to treat me to a coffee and bacon sandwich.

Although the group were chatting away like old friends it turned out that most of them hadn’t met before - they worked in different companies, in different creative disciplines and across different countries and continents. They included Simon of Londondenim, who designs jeans in London, has them made in Japan and sells them in Harrods; Rachel Lasebikan who set up Mojisola to develop African fashions with sustainable business practice; Martin MALii-Karlsson, a media producer from Sweden; Helen Taylor from the research agency Spinach; Alastair Robertson from Imagination; Tomas Mrkvicka from Ogilvy Prague; and the charming Charles Frith, a planner and professional blog commenter who I’m trying to entice into commenting on this post.

Talking to people with such an eclectic mix of creative talents made for a very enjoyable morning - the kind that really brings home the opportunities that all this blogging and social media are opening up. In one way it seemed the most natural thing in the world, in another it was all slightly surreal - I often think meeting people via online networks is a bit like being teleported down from the Enterprise. If I hadn’t started writing this blog I’d never have met these people. Making new offline connections has been probably the single most valuable thing I’ve got out of writing Wishful Thinking, something it’s hard to explain to the (many) blog sceptics I know.

If meeting up with other creative people sounds like your idea of fun, have a look at the likemind site to see if there’s an event in your city - they seem to be taking over the world, so hopefully there will be one near you before long. Hat-tip to Noah, another of the instigators of likemind.

If you’re in London, make sure you bookmark Russell Davies’ blog and keep an eye on the top left corner, where he announces the dates of his coffee mornings, where you’ll be guaranteed a warm welcome and interesting conversations. I’m living proof that it’s not just advertising people. Scroll down a bit and he lists coffee mornings as far afield as Jakarta, Sydney and Toronto.

PS - I’ve added a ‘Creative Networks’ section on the right sidebar, just under the blogroll, with likemind and the coffee mornings, plus the excellent shapeshifters, which I’ve featured before.

Interesting 2007 Conference - London 16th June

20070416 13:45

Last but certainly not least in today’s conference roundup is Interesting 2007, brainchild of Russell Davies.

Interesting 2007 Logo

First the bad news - there are no tickets currently available, although there will hopefully be a few more on sale at some point. I was going to post about it earlier but didn’t realise it would sell out so fast. Sorry.

If/when I hear that more tickets are available I’ll post about it immediately, but the quickest way to find out is to subscribe to Russell’s blog.

Now for the good news - in spite of the fact that no speakers have been announced, with Russell behind it, it’s almost guaranteed to live up to its title. Russell knows a thing or two about how to be interesting himself, and he also knows a lot of people who are, so I’m really looking forward to this.

I will of course be blogging about it afterwards. And even if you’re not going you can get hold of an unusual conference t-shirt courtesy of Ben of Noisy Decent Graphics and The Design Conspiracy, who created the Interesting logo.
