I’m a business coach and trainer specialising in the creative industries.

I work with clients across the whole spectrum of artistic and commercial creativity, including television, design, advertising, marketing, publishing, architecture, computer games, music, fashion, film, theatre, dance and technology.

Even if you don’t have ‘creative’ in your job title, I’d love to work with you if you’re passionate about what you do and see creativity as central to your success.

Creative business coaching

I provide a specialist business coaching service for creative professionals and their managers, both in person and via the web.

Training for creative people

I deliver in-house training for creative companies, and workshops for creative industries support organisations.

My most popular workshops include:

Time Management for Creative People

How to Motivate Creative People (Including Yourself)

Creative Presentation Skills

I also run occasional public workshops – click here if you’d like to be first to know next time I announce new dates.

My background

I’ve been coaching and training creative professionals since 1996, when I started practising as a psychotherapist and noticed I had a high proportion of artistic clients suffering from conditions such as writer’s block and stage fright.

Realising most of them needed professional coaching rather than personal therapy, I started a specialist coaching service for artists and other creative professionals, which continues to this day. Since 2000 I have provided coaching and training to companies as well as private clients.

Organisations I have worked with include the BBC, Channel 4, Transport for London, The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, TBWA Media Arts Lab, Dare Digital, ASOS, Magnum, Econsultancy, Gist, Vodafone, BT, Servier Laboratories, The Orchestra of the Age of Englightenment, The British Library Business and IP Centre, The Cultural Industries Development Agency (CIDA), The Arts Council, The Cultural Leadership Programme, Arts & Business, Spread the Word, The University of Warwick, King’s College London, the University of the Arts, London, and the Royal College of Art.

I’m based in London, so I have plenty of clients in the UK. But in 2012 I’m also working with clients on three continents in person, and on six continents via the web. So wherever you are in the world, if you really want to work with me we can make it happen. (And if you’re reading this in Antarctica, I’d love to hear from you!)

As well as facilitating others’ creativity, I know the creative process from the inside-out, as a poet and the author of a string of successful ebooks and two of the most popular creative business blogs in the world, here at Wishful Thinking and at LateralAction.com.

I have studied the creative economy in depth, for the MA in Creative & Media Enterprises (with distinction) from the University of Warwick. I originally qualified as a psychotherapist and am a registered member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA).

My work has been featured in media outlets including Creative Review, the Wall Street Journal, Mslexia, The Author and the Discovery Health Channel.

“Especially insightful.”

Dorothy Byrne, Head of News & Current Affairs – Channel 4

“Mark’s session proved to be that very rare thing: an enlightening seminar that inspires you to really question (and improve) your creative process, rather than a shopping list of trite ‘how-tos’ on the subject. Part history lesson, part creative road map, Mark’s presentation and workshop was illuminating, entertaining and, most importantly, beneficial to my development team.”

Sean Kirkegaard, Development Executive – BBC Children’s Television
